Looking closely at men’s fashion in 2022, we can see a radical shift in fashion from clothing to dresses. At a time, the term ‘dress’ was used to refer to women only, but now, the trend is changing drastically. Look at this year’s Met Gala: Stars who appeared in this grand event were ‘dressed’ in unique attires. For example, popular racer Lewis Hamilton wore something unusual and unexpected. The ruthless driver was dressed in a black suit and white lace. Now, go a decade back, and you can figure out this was not considered a ‘dress for men.’ Likewise, in the same event, popular singer Troye Siwan was dressed in a simple black gown. Yet again, this was not a mainly dress a decade earlier.
Thus, Hamilton and Troye are just two examples of men who appeared at the 2022 Met Gala with a new sense of dress-up. What is wholesome is the fact that this is becoming a new trend in men’s fashion. Simplicity and preference for dressing up are becoming the new normal in men’s fashion. Nevertheless, it is essential to note that this new sense of men’s dress-up is not only seen in the private lives of these influential men. Rather, they wear these simple and old-fashioned dress-ups for the big screens and mega-events. Another example of this trend is Lil Nas X, a popular rapper. Lil Nas appeared in a simple purple dress at the Music Award (2022), one of the most coveted Hollywood events.
Now, you do not have to be 100 years old to recall that pink was a color for women. It had an enormous role in the women’s fashion industry. Likewise, wearing matching color dresses was a thing of women. But now, men are taking it over.
The Term ‘Dress’ is Redefined in the 21st Century
Before the technological advancement and scientific revolution, the term dress was largely feminine. Women were solely entitled to bring variations to dress-ups. On the other hand, it was simply a matter of being a man that you would avoid any interest in ‘dress.’ After all, masculinity and beauty were seen as two different components; thus, women would come up with new fashion trends and dresses.
But today, we see men coming up with native and unique dress-ups. Nothing wrong or right, but the trend is taking men back to old ages. Wearing skirts, for example, was widely popular among old Egyptians and Romans. Today, it continues to be a favorite dress of many influential men and celebrities worldwide.
Likewise, wearing simple gawn was a favorite dress of old Greece. And if we look at the current men’s fashion trend today, simple gawn is the go-to dress of many men. This indicates that men are redefining their sense of fashion and dressing up by going back to their ancestors.
